Within four months, he became area secretary, district member in 2000, regional in-charge in 2001, and secretary of Banke and Bardiya in 2004.

Having served as Bheri-Karnali chairman of the All Nepal Peasants Association (Revolutionary) in 2003, Tharu became central member of Tharu National Liberation Front. Having passed the Proficiency Certificate Level from Management Faculty, Tharu had to suffer great losses in life due to politics. His wife Gita Tharu and younger brother Jagat are in a state of disappearance while the wife of his younger brother was killed by the army during the armed conflict.
